Director Kerlikowske addresses Drug Court Professionals and Visits Drug and Veterans Treatment Court

Director Kerlikowske addressed 2,500 drug court professionals at the 15th Annual Training Conference of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals on June 11th in Anaheim, CA. He commended the organization for their commitment to reduce substance abuse and reiterated the Administration’s strong support for drug court, illustrated in the FY2010 Budget and a letter he presented from President Obama marking the 20th anniversary of the first drug court in the United States. While in California, the Director also visited Judge Wendy Lindley’s Veterans Treatment Court in Orange County, California and thanked the team there for their life changing and life saving work.

Situation Report on Pseudoephedrine Smurfing in California

A Situation Report by the National Drug Intelligence Center indicates pseudoephedrine smurfing in California is widespread and organized. The report finds methamphetamine producers in California are smurfing -- acquiring ingredients to manufacture methamphetamine through frequent purchases of small amounts of over-the-counter cold medicine -- to evade laws in the United States and Mexico restricting sales of pseudoephedrine.

Director Kerlikowske Gives Remarks on U.S. Drug Policy at Release of UN World Drug Report

On Wednesday, June 24th, Director Kerlikowske gave remarks on U.S. drug policy at a press conference on the United Nation’s 2009 World Drug Report. “We all share a responsibility to address drug abuse within our societies,” said Director Kerlikowske. “The Obama Administration is committed to expanding treatment initiatives to ensure that those struggling to overcome the disease of addiction have access to effective, evidence-based programs. Through comprehensive and effective enforcement, education, prevention, and treatment, we can reduce illicit drug use and its devastating consequences.” Antonio Mario Costa, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime, released the report, which provides trend analysis of the global drug situation and main drug markets, and present key findings.

Ceremony to mark swearing-in of Gil Kerlikowske as Director of ONDCP

On Friday, June 19th Justice Anthony M. Kennedy officiated at the swearing-in ceremony of Gil Kerlikowske, Director of ONDCP. In his remarks, the Director spoke of a national drug control strategy that "leans forward, changes the conversation on our drug problem, builds upon the successes of past initiatives, and engages all parts of the system in its development and execution."

Director Kerlikowske Asks for Input on Prevention Strategies During Recovery High School Visit in Massachusetts

On June 16th, ONDCP Director Gil Kerlikowske met with students and staff of William J. Ostiguy, Springfield, and Northshore Recovery High Schools. Open since 2006, the schools create a safe, sober, and supportive academic environment where students in recovery can develop the skills and strength needed for personal, academic, and vocational success.  Students shared personal stories, including the events that led them to enroll in the recovery schools.  More than 30 students and their parents provided the Director with suggestions on how national policy could incorporate lessons learned from these schools, emphasizing the importance of effective prevention, education, and treatment programs for young people.  Director Kerlikowske commended the staff for their remarkable dedication and congratulated the students on their courageous work to overcome addiction.
